Shopify rises to second place after WordPress in global CMS share

Recently, in the research company "w3techs" has published that Shopify has became second top share of CMS in the world at July 2020, by researching top 10,000,000 websites.

What is Shopify?

Shopify is established in Canada and expanded their services to more than 175 countries in the world. Currently, more than 1,000,000 eCommerce websites are based in Shopify and the company is in a hype.

In November 2017, they have established Shopify Japan and trying to show their presence in Japan.

And it was a huge news when Shopify has became second place in most used CMS in the world.

Precise ranking is the below.

As we all know, the king of CMS is still Wordpress, which has 37.6% of share in worlds CMS.

And in the second place, Shopify is following after Wordpress with it's share of 2.5%. Until the last month, Joomla was in the second place with 2.4% of share, but in this month, Shopify has finally overcome it's share beating Joomla.

So Shopify is making it's status in the eCommerce field, but recently, due to it's strong server, fair number of companies are making their corporate website with Shopify.

Shopify's share compared to last year

It's of course important to see the current status of having 2.5 share in the world. But it's also more important to see how it grew from the previous year.

For example, it's not in a good situation when one has 80% but decreased it's share by 10% from previous year isn't it.(Just an example)

And that's why we have prepared for previous year's table below.

If we look at previous years comparison, we might have a different opinion about it. As the share has declined for Joomla, Drupal, Squarespace, which was below 3rd places. On the other hand, Wordpress and Shopify has gained a lot of share and has growing their CMS share.

Also, we are surprised by how strong Wordpress, with 3.5% gain from previous year. Shopify also gained from 1.6% to 2.5%, so the growth rate is higher in Shopify.

Shopify in Japan, and it's summary

At this point, honestly speaking, Shopify is not yet standard in Japan.

However, lots of Japanese companies are on the way to integrate to Shopify, and individuals are coming in to Shopify field as well.

The barrier is a lot of information about Shopify is still available in only English, and Japanese articles about Shopify are still few. As I am one of the Shopify Lover, I will continue to publish Japanese articles about Shopify and hope I can contribute to Japanese community.
